Hugging Face Datasets: Over a Million Free Data Sets for Testing AI Tools

Hugging Face is a website where people share AI models and the data used to build and test them. As of October 2026, its dataset hub lists more than 1 million datasets (1,088,054 when we checked on October 13). Most are made for AI research, but some are handy for a small business that wants to try AI safely.

Ways to use it this week

  • Test a customer-service chatbot before real customers see it. Bitext's customer-support dataset has 26,872 sample customer messages and replies, sorted into topics like orders and refunds. Ask your chatbot the same questions and see how it answers.
  • Try new AI apps on practice data, not your customers' data. A sample dataset lets you test a tool without uploading real names, emails or invoices.
  • Look before you download. Many dataset pages have a preview table (the "dataset viewer"), so you can scroll through the rows in your browser first.

Try it now (no key): open this link:

https://datasets-server.huggingface.co/rows?dataset=bitext/Bitext-customer-support-llm-chatbot-training-dataset&config=default&split=train&offset=0&length=3

It returns the first three rows of that dataset: sample customer messages about cancelling an order, the topic ("ORDER") and a sample reply. You can ask for up to 100 rows at a time.

Limits and rules

  • For visitors without an account, Hugging Face's published limits are 500 API requests and 100 page views per five minutes from one internet address. It says these numbers can change. A free account raises them.
  • Some datasets are "gated." You must log in and agree to share your username and email address with the dataset's owner before you can download the files.
  • Anyone can upload a dataset, so quality varies. Read the description page (the "dataset card") before you trust one.

License and credit: there is no single license for the hub. Each dataset declares its own license on its card. The Bitext example above is under CDLA-Sharing-1.0, which has its own sharing terms. Check the license on every dataset before you use it in your business, and credit the creator the way that license asks.

Golden Rock can help choose a dataset and use it to test an AI assistant for a client before it goes live.

Who should care: any business owner who is about to put an AI chatbot or AI tool in front of customers and wants to test it first.
